HEC / ETC (Education Testing Council)

HEC's future graduate aptitude test — confirmed, but not yet in effect.

HAT stands for Higher Education Aptitude Test. HEC intends for HAT-General and HAT-Subject — run by ETC, HEC’s own testing body, not NTS — to eventually replace GAT for MS/MPhil/PhD admission.

This is a real, HEC-confirmed plan, not a rumor. But as of today, it is not yet operative.

What it's used for

  • Planned future replacement for GAT in graduate admissions once implemented

Current status — deferred to Fall 2027

HEC’s own official channel confirmed: "HEC has deferred implementation of ETC-conducted HAT-General and HAT-Subject admissions tests from Fall 2026 to Fall 2027, following requests from universities/DAIs for additional implementation time. Fall 2026 admissions will continue under the existing admission criteria." The timeline has already slipped once — if you’re admitting for Fall 2026 or earlier, prepare for GAT, not HAT.
